Job Description

The Sustainable Investing team (SI) works with the investment departments across the fund to ensure all of our investment groups integrate environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities into the investment decision-making and asset management activities. The team is made up of individuals with expertise in investing, environmental, social and governance matters. Part of the team manages a public equity investment portfolio that allows them to research how ESG factors impact investment outcomes and leverage these insights across the fund.

We are presently recruiting for a Senior Sustainability Officer to join the Sustainable Investing team.  The Senior Sustainability Officer will report into the Managing Director, Head of Sustainable Investing with a dotted line into the Senior Managing Director & Global Head of Real Assets. (RA)  The successful candidate will be a senior team member of SI and will work as a dedicated resource for the Real Assets department, supporting deal teams and portfolio companies. 

In this role, you will build a direct bridge from SI into the RA department and provide consistent partnership with the department to drive value creation.  Success in this role will result in our portfolio companies being best in class in driving value uplift and risk reduction from ESG integration and result in a demonstrable increase in investment returns and reduction of risk. You will be required  to assimilate the industry and business fundamentals of the asset, areas of ESG risk and opportunity and work with the deal teams, portfolio company boards and executives to build the business case for advancing their ESG/climate strategy, development of this strategy, its operationalization and integration into reporting.

Role Specific Accountabilities:

As the Senior Sustainability Officer, you will:

  • Integrate leading sustainability strategies, process and thought leadership into Real Assets investment strategy, asset management and committee processes;
  • Develop, implement and monitor emissions measurement, reporting and abatement strategies
  • Engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on the fund’s sustainability initiatives with a specific focus on Real Assets, currently a C$100 billion portfolio of real estate, infrastructure, energy & resources and power & renewables investments. 

As further detail:

INTEGRATE:  Actively work with investment teams, Portfolio Value Creation and SI to establish diligence plans, action plans, reporting & measurement systems and control frameworks for new deals and portfolio companies applying SI best practices and learnings to the department and network.  Become the key conduit between SI and RA portfolio companies on knowledge sharing, learnings and thought leadership.  Direct and drive collaboration between RA investment groups and portfolio companies to drive value creation. 

DEVELOP:  Given this is a new role, you will also need to be able to develop a strategy for the role in collaboration with RA and SI leadership that complements both departments objectives. This will include setting meaningful metrics that demonstrate both ESG performance and positive impact on value.

ENGAGE:  Work with RA leadership to prioritize their ESG approach and implementation into individual group strategies, investment screening, asset management and performance measurement for investments. This will require applying SI’s existing ESG materiality matrix and tools to appraise climate risk to the portfolio to develop an objective lens on how to advance the roll-out and how to quantify impact. Actively engage in investment committee and asset management discussions on critical ESG issues. Actively participate and contribute to SI engagement efforts internally and externally and become a visible thought leader that can effectively communicate our approach to integration of ESG considerations into our Real Assets investments.

COORDINATON: You will be a member of SI and expected to partner with the broader SI team and leverage its infrastructure to develop the role. However, you will spend substantially all your time working with RA and be physically located within the RA team. You will need to develop fluency in CPP Investments’ approach to ESG integration, our Policy on Sustainable Investing and our Proxy Voting Policy & Guidelines to ensure you can present a “one fund” approach to RA. You will also need to ensure that learnings in RA can be recycled back to SI to ensure that these can be leveraged more broadly across the fund.

COLLABORATE: Work well within a global investment department and a diverse set of portfolio companies.  Identify opportunities to create value while working with teams to build ESG plans, incite urgency and buy-in from senior investment professionals, portfolio company boards and management to own and deliver those plans. Work with and engage thought leaders to bring best practices from the cutting edge of sustainability to traditional industries within the Real Assets industry. Contribute to the Public Affairs and Communication’s accountability outreach to keep stakeholders up-to-date on how we manage the risks associated with ESG including climate change in specific asset classes.

Qualifications

Significant demonstratable relevant experience, culminating in a leadership role with a proven track record of shaping corporate strategy and operational performance improvement to enhance the long-term value and sustainability of commercial enterprise/s).

Prior experience of demonstrating each of the following skills in a corporate setting (outside-in or from the inside) is imperative:

  • Identify key areas of risk and opportunity to drive value from ESG/climate integration in the portfolio company. Simultaneously, they will need to be able to
  • Identify impediments (board, executives, regulation, resources, technology etc.) to capturing these and approaches to overcoming these
  • Develop a strategy for this newly created role with meaningful metrics that demonstrate both ESG performance and positive impact on value

Excellent influencing skills:

  • Able to quickly assimilate a board and executive teams’ appetite for ESG/climate change. Having done so you will need to be able to navigate internal stakeholder dynamics and determine how to position the business case for moving forward (brand, revenue uplift, cost reduction, accelerate growth, expand funding, expand multiple etc.) to win support to move forward. In doing this you will need to be able to navigate ESG in the context of other internal priorities and resourcing and work with deal teams to agree on how to align and prioritize elements of the ESG strategy to optimize value creation in the portfolio company. This will require an ability to reconcile value vs values on specific issues and with key individual stakeholders in the company
  • Building support within a portfolio company to embark upon a new ESG/climate transition strategy will require you to influence the board and executive committee of the company. This communication is likely to be done in conjunction with the deal team lead (MD/SP), but you will need to be able to build trust and demonstrate subject matter expertise quickly and with credibility to drive the outcome we seek from the role.
