Plant Manager


This is a Contract position in Sarnia, ON posted February 1, 2021.

POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Western Operations Manager, the Plant Manager is tasked with achieving the unit’s established production objectives.

You will provide operational leadership in all of your unit’s activities to engage your team members and support them in achieving objectives.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: General plant administration, analysis functions related to producing reports and/or tracking information for the plant.

This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
• Working with the Western Operations Manager, insure that sufficient employee time, supervisor support, and funds are budgeted for safety equipment, training and to carry out the safety program.

• Evaluate supervisors each year to make sure they are carrying out their responsibilities and are aware of their health and safety responsibilities.

• Provide all supervisory staff with proper, well-maintained tools and equipment, plus any special personal protective devices which may be required.

• Ensure that all personnel are aware of and effectively practice the policies and procedures.

Performs a variety of safety related functions.

This includes, but is not litmited to, the following:
• Assist with the Health and Safety Coordinator to ensure that a plant wide safety committee is formed and is carrying out its responsibilities as described in this program
• Insure that accidents and incidents are fully investigated and corrective action taken to prevent the hazardous conditions or behaviors from happening again
• Insure that a record of injuries and illnesses is maintained and posted
• Set a good example by following established safety rules, polices and procedures and attending required training
• Report unsafe practices or conditions to the supervisor of the area where the hazard was observed.

• Assist the Plant Supervisor and the Health and Safety Coordinator in employee training.

• Document training when completed with staff
• Document a weekly walk-around of the plant facility.

People Management
• Employee discipline as necessary
• Train, develop and motivate plant personnel
• Maintain proper personnel and job classifications
• Ensure employees are qualified to perform their duties Business Development
• Understand market place, competition and pricing issues
• Maintain knowledge of major customers and their issues
• Be aware of current market pricing for out-going material Inventory Control
• Monitor inventories
• Communicate inventory levels for movement
• Facilitate and monitor outbound shipments (BOL processing) Production Management/Coordination
• Maintain and analyze production reports
• Identify maintenance and/or repair needs daily
• Order supplies (baling wire, parts, etc.)
• Maintain and ensure all quality standards
• Set and monitor production goals and ensure we bale everything we receive and account for the waste
• Understand new technology (e.g.

screening, sort lines, etc.) Cost Control
• Approve and monitor overtime
• Control overhead costs (line item assignments)
• Prepare, implement and control preventative maintenance programs for all equipment
• Approve all purchases as per Company policy
• Complete CERS for the purchase of assets and obtain proper approval
• Sign off A/P invoices
• Implement and promote safety/fire protection, loss prevention and security
• Monitor Worker Compensation Claims This job description indicates the general nature and level of work, duties and responsibilities expected of the incumbent.

The incumbent may be asked to perform other duties as required.

• Post secondary degree, preferred in engineering.

• Proven troubleshooting ability with emphasis on safety and reliability.

• Leadership and a collaborative spirit that inspire and engage teams to achieve excellence
• Sound judgment to ensure follow-up and effective implementation of solutions in accordance with company priorities and to make appropriate decisions
• Strong persuasiveness to foster maximum buy-in in a difficult context
• Strong communication skills, tact and diplomacy
• Ability to guide and coach team members
• Ability to perform machining would be an asset.

• Must be well organized.

• Must be aware of all safety standards and requirements for maintenance work.

• Experienced with MS (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.) Experience:
• 5 to 10 years experience in a manufacturing or related industry.

Previous experience with equipment used in the recycling industry and with related mobile equipment would be a definite asset.
