Director of Resident Care Services

Scarborough Retirement Residence

POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: Director of Resident Care Services DEPARTMENT: Health and Wellness Clinic REPORTS TO: Executive Director DIRECT REPORTING: Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, Personal Support Workers and Companions JOB LOCATION: Scarborough Retirement Residence – SRR 148 Markham Road Scarborough M1M 2Z8 POSITION SUMMARY Leads all aspects of the Health / Wellness Clinic within Scarborough Retirement Residence [SRR] to ensure high quality, effective, efficient, timely delivery of programs and services to meet and exceed established standards of resident health, wellness and care in compliance with the RHRA, Ontario legislative and regulatory environments, as well as company directives, guidelines and business requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES Resident Health/ Well Being / Care: Manage team of registered, licensed personnel responsible for resident health/ well-being and personal care, twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week in compliance with requirements dictated by Ontario Acts and Regulations.

· Schedule all Health / Wellness staff for 24-hour coverage of SRR
· Oversee Resident Harm Prevention and Incident Management programs, including but not limited to: incident investigations, on the spot staff training, report submissions, disclosure of strategies implemented/revised to prevent a recurrence.

· Provide effective consultative and concerns resolution skills with families and residents
· Assist with Care Navigation
· Provide knowledge of health / wellness / care process and application in developing Resident Care Profiles
· Ensure compliance with Ontario legislation / regulations re medication dispensing and recording
· Co-Lead (alongside the Executive Director) SRR’s Resident/Family Experience/Satisfaction Survey and Quality Improvement Programs.

Management / Administration:
· Review / understand Collective Agreement [Service Employees International Union – [SEIU] and address employee concerns in accordance with CA process [es]
· Implement / manage Programs for Health / Wellness staff: Performance Appraisal; Attendance Management; Staff Development; Benefit and Pension; Injury / Illness in accordance with company policies
· Responsible for Health/Wellness department financials, providing a biweekly variance analysis for staffing patterns (i.e.

unplanned over-time), and a monthly variance analysis for other expenses (i.e.

supplies, equipment, training)
· Collect and analyze data, create reports and oversee tracking documentation to identify CQI gaps Leadership / Staff Development / Training:
· Understand, apply ‘Team’ building and Change Management concepts, principles in accordance with programs outlined by the Executive Director and Owners
· Develop daily / weekly department staff meeting schedules/agendas to address emerging and ongoing issues, needs
· Develop In-service Education programs to meet Health / Wellness staff needs, as well as other SRR staff, as identified Recruitment / Orientation:
· Develop Health / Wellness staff Position Descriptions, within company guidelines / format / CA, for discussion, approval, implementation
· Recruit, hire, train and routinely evaluate competence of all Health / Wellness staff according to company Human Resource directives, guidelines, accepted procedures Continuous Qualify Improvement [CQI]:
· Develop Continuous Quality Improvement [CQI] Program to ensure high quality response to Resident Health / Wellness, care needs aligning them SRR’s Vision Mission and Values.

· Assist [as a Management Team member] with the process of achieving ORCA Accreditation Process Additional Programs in Area of Responsibility: Develop, implement, manage associated programs as identified, including, but not limited to:
· CPR & First Aid
· Physiotherapy
· Transportation services (urgent and non-emergency)
· Eye, Hearing and Dental Clinics
· Outbreaks/Pandemics
· Immunization
· Health Awareness Month initiatives/fundraising
· Community outreach initiatives, e.g., Seniors to SRR for dining, services, activities Other requirements as may be determined by the Executive Director of Scarborough Retirement Residence.

QUALIFICATIONS The position must have previous managerial and leadership experience, preferably in a seniors’ environment.

Human relations and negotiation skills required in handling variety of interactions with residents, families, staff, unions and the general public.

The position should be a strong team leader and have team participant skills.

Although preferred, not necessarily have a current certificate of competency from the Ontario College of Nurses, or preparation at the B.Sc.N.

The position should have comprehensive knowledge of nursing and health care / wellness practices and techniques, including courses or experience in a seniors’ setting.
