Role Summary

Scope: Plans, directs and coordinates all activities of the Maintenance Department. All activities are directed to achieve company objectives at the lowest possible cost and the highest possible quality level. Manages the employees engaged in plant and machine maintenance, alteration and repair work. Provides continuous technical direction for maintenance and the manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all equipment meets HS&E standards and ensure compliance with any applicable legislation, assist with continual improvement projects and ISO14001 system compliance
  • Effective day to day management of PM system and preparation work schedules for Maintenance personnel to optimize equipment uptime and to ensure that equipment is maintained in good condition at all times.
  • Develop strategic short and long term maintenance plans.
  • Financial accountability for departmental budget.  Monitor progress to company business plan to achieve targets (ie. Maintenance spending, overtime)
  • Investigate and coordinate solutions to problems and excessive costs identified in the Maintenance Dept. Work closely with the Purchasing Dept. to order parts and equipment and maintain an adequate inventory of spare parts. 
  • Select reliable contractors for major machine repair work and manage them according to the Contractor Safety Orientation procedure.
  • Ensure that safe working procedures and excellent housekeeping practises are adhered to at all times.
  • Implement and adhere to Mafact initiatives such as Standardized Work and 5S within the Maintenance.
  • Support all departments in providing assistance to solving problems and continuous improvement projects that are initiated.
  • Lead, coordinate and follow up on Continuous Improvement projects in the Maintenance Dept.

Key Responsibilities Continued …

  • Support the APQP process by participating on the launch team to ensure that all launches are on time and produced with the highest quality level and lowest possible cost.
  • Manage all aspects of record keeping and reporting of Maintenance activities to facilitate problem solving. Report on required monthly KPIs (such as equipment downtime, OA, PM completion)
  • Maintain documentation on all equipment, such as machine manuals, electric circuit diagrams, hydraulic-pneumatic circuit diagrams, assembly drawings, spare part lists, and preventive/predictive and emergency breakdown work orders/instructions.
  • Ensure that Unimotion-Gear retain and develop qualified mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic & electronic staff, to conduct all preventive, predictive and emergency maintenance activities.
  • Manage performance of Maintenance employees including regular communication meetings and feedback, coaching, training and timely performance appraisal completion, and maintain these records.
  • Ensure all employees’ concerns are handled in a timely and constructive manner, in accordance with applicable company policies.

Key Qualifications/Requirements

  • BSc in Mechanical Engineering, valid Industrial Electrician or Millwright license.
  • Five years of previous experience working in a similar managerial capacity within an automotive manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of electric, mechanic, pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Familiar with applicable codes relating to maintenance such as Ontario Hydro Code, CSA, OHSA, Spill Response.
  • Able to travel outside the country to customer / supplier sites where required.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Able to work with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent organization skills with demonstrated success in managing people and time.

Additional Information

  • Participate as a member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Participate as champion and auditor in IATF 16949 and ISO 18001 and ISO 14001 elements as required.
  • Comply with the applicable responsibilities related to effective quality management in accordance with Unimotion-Gear’s Quality Management System (QMS) IATF 16949.
    • Ensure that the assigned process is delivering the intended outputs.
    • Report on the performance of the quality management system and on opportunities for improvement to top management.
