User Experience Designer – Design Systems & Operations

RBC

This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted February 8, 2021.

About Design Platform at RBC

The Design Platform team facilitates the co-creation and documentation of the systems, tools and frameworks that enable design at scale. We’re part of the team helping to operationalize design at RBC.

As a User Experience Designer on the Design Platform Team, you will work with the team to collaboratively concept, design, communicate about UI components for re-use in digital products across RBC. You will also be responsible for consulting with other design teams and product groups to identify and solve for systems-level problems.

You are interested in the idea of design systems — looking holistically at how a suite of products can be designed and developed in a coordinated way to create a consistent user experience and maximize reuse of work.

What will you do?:

RBC Digital Design has over 160 designers (and growing), and they work with an even larger team of developers, product managers, and business stakeholders over 10 lines of business. This scale and complexity makes delivering a consistent, high quality experience for customers a challenge.

This is where you come in: In this role, you will help our Design Platform team scale product design across the organization so that we can deliver better, more consistent experiences for our customers while working as efficiently as possible.

As a member of our team you’ll be facilitating the discovery and development of design best practices across the organization, and manifest these through components, patterns & guidelines within our design system, contribution process, design tooling and education programs.

What you will work on:

 Operational and Systems Design
•    Provide guidance to team members with advice and techniques that improve their understanding and mastery of design systems and design operations.
•    Understand user interface patterns and behaviours, and use that understanding to create reusable, flexible and accessible components.
•    Inform best practices and design guidelines across the design organization.
•    Determine strategies for enabling the collection, refinement, governance and distribution of shared patterns and components.
•    Create documentation and contribute to educational programs around systems thinking.

•    Contribute to the creation of reusable components, utilities and libraries within Figma.
•    Build relationships with stakeholders and across teams

Research and Testing
•    Facilitate primary research with internal designers and developers in order to understand their pain points with tools and libraries.
•    Perform competitive audits and stay on top of techniques and practices being used by other large design operations teams.

•    Informing measurement practices for determining the efficacy of UI components.

•    Ensure that components meet high standards of inclusivity.

What do you need to succeed?:
Must-have

•    BA/BS degree in Design (e.g. interaction, graphic, visual communications, product, industrial), Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Science (CS), Systems Design / Human Factors Engineering or a related field or equivalent practical experience
•    A minimum of 5 years of experience in designing usable interfaces across multiple channels and platforms
•    Experience in an applied research setting including experience integrating user research into product designs and design practices
•    Demonstrated ability to articulate design strategy, rationale and logic; describing benefits and highlighting risks associated with design decisions
•    Demonstrated expertise with design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Sketch, InVision DSM or Adobe XD.

•    Holistic Mindset — you think in terms of systems rather than individual parts.

•    Experience creating or contributing to, a design system.

Nice to have
•    MA/MS degree or certification in Design (e.g. interaction, graphic, visual communications, product, industrial), Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Science (CS), Systems Design / Human Factors Engineering or a related field or equivalent practical experience or a related field
•    Experience working within a large organization and within an agile environment

•    High-level understanding of web technologies (JavaScript / HTML / CSS) and component frameworks (Angular / React / Vue, etc.)

•    Knowledge of web accessibility considerations

•    Strong understanding of strengths and shortcomings of different research methods, including when and how to apply them during each product phase
