Sr. Director, Chief Architect – Enterprise Services


This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted August 28, 2020.

What is the opportunity?

The Chief Architect of Core Modernization reports into the Head of Enterprise Architecture. This role has the mission to guide the enterprise portfolio of application towards a modern architecture based on Cloud, API, AI and other innovative technologies and focus on achieving reuse across the enterprise. This role will be responsible for the functions of Technology and Architecture Governance, provide architectural consulting for enterprise solutions, and manage the EA Program office including functions such as Application Inventory Management, planning and strategy. This role leads a team of architects and EA operation teams to deliver on the above mandate.  They will be required to coordinate among distributed architecture teams to streamline the architecture Governance functions and improve effectiveness. They will work across LOB architecture, business and technology teams to facilitate the core modernization mandate. They will also be responsible for setting architectural designs for enterprise initiatives that span multiple lines of business.


 What will you do?

  • Build and lead a team of talented architects who can influence and lead the enterprise towards its strategic target state
  • Provide advisory and design services for key enterprise-wide services
  • Work with LOB and Technology Domain Architects to influence and drive reuse, coordinate between service providers to drive coherence of roadmaps and identify synergies and gaps.
  • Define an enhance Architectural Governance model that is aligned to the mandate of reuse, automated controls and transparency
  • Manage flawless execution on EA operational processes such as Governance, Application Inventory Management and Communication/Advocacy
  • Mange and track EA Metrics and Financials
  • Perform continuous improvement activities on EA processes to an create an efficient organization
  • Define a consistent architectural engagement model for the enterprise
  • Demonstrate the effectiveness and value of Enterprise Architecture across the organization


What do you need to succeed?


  • 15+ years of experience leading architecture teams – a combination of managerial and technical leadership
  • Drive for results and business outcomes.
  • Expert knowledge, experience, and understanding of architecture, application development, application systems design, and integration.
  • A practitioner of both Enterprise Architecture and Solution Architecture with a record of both program and delivery outcomes based on their architectures.
  • Deep knowledge of Financial Services and relevant technology trends in the industry.
  • Capability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and relationships with distributed architecture areas, Application Development, RBC business groups and others.
  • Must be able to influence the architecture community to take an “opinionated” stance on standards
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and aggressive deliverables and take a leadership role in moving initiatives forward and removing obstacles
  • Lean Six Sigma or equivalent to drive continuous lean operations



  • Knowledge of strategic technology domains such as Cloud, API, Security, Data/AI
  • Have led or been part of an Enterprise Architecture Function
  • Experience researching emerging technology and providing Points of View or whitepapers
