Sr. Database Engineer – In-memory DB MemSQL, Mongo DB, Casandra

This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted September 1, 2020.

What is the opportunity?

 

The Sr. Database Engineer will be responsible for providing expertise and oversight in building and maintaining highly efficient next generation Data Management solutions portfolio. 

What will you do?

 

You will be required to collaborate with multiple project/program stakeholders, including the Business Units, Project Managers, Solution Architects, Business Systems Analysts, Development, Quality Assurance, IT infrastructure teams and third party vendors.

 

  • Provide thought leadership and be responsible for the highly efficient Database design & solutions supporting container application to ensure alignment with programs needs of reusability and simplified integration in to Wealth Management systems and alignment with reference architecture direction.
  • Provide technical direction, anticipate/obtain resolution of issues & implement solutions for the integration of DMI projects into Wealth Management’s & RBC’s infrastructure environment
  • Ensure smooth implementation of system changes to mitigate impact to business unit daily activities and clients utilizing T&O best practices for release, build, configuration and environment management
  • Defines/Supports application SLAs from Database solutions perspective
  • Provides work estimates using fact/metrics based model with supporting assumptions
  • Anticipates and quantifies tactical, operational and strategic risks applying risk-based approach to forecasting
  • Resolves complex issues and conflicts (including architectural direction vs project constraints); escalates to executive level where required
  • Provide leadership and oversight to small technical team

 

The ideal candidate will have a sharp business mind, understand user needs and align them with the products that are being created. Ultimately, you are motivated by the desire to optimize productivity and nurture program success from inception to completion.

 

What do you need to succeed? 

Must-have:

  • 5+ years of proven working experience in distributed in-memory DB (MemSQL, Mongo DB, Casandra etc.) or other massive parallel processing (MPP) DB. And proven expertise working with enterprise grade Database systems such as SQL Server, Sybase, Oracle 
  • Highly proficient with recent experience in query profiling, query optimization, performance monitoring, tuning on in-memory DB and relational database, and solid understanding of database concepts (CAP Theorem, Active-Active Architecture).
  • Hands-on experience with data modelling including logical and physical database design
  • Strong technical knowledge of database architecture, distributed data storage and management principles, with experience using related technologies
  • Recent experience working with Microservices (Docker), Container Orchestrator (Kubernetes), Continuous Integration Tools (Jenkins, UCD), Configuration Management platforms (Ansible, Puppet)
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience developing Java based solutions and environment configuration on Linux/AIX based systems. And experience in development management process best practices, working in a fast-paced Agile environment

Nice to have:

  • Working knowledge of Clustering for sharing storage and replication/availability/monitoring solutions for databases. Familiarity with any Cloud Technologies is an added advantage
  • Integration of different data sources, like Big Data systems and relational databases
  • Ability to architect and implement end-to-end container management
  • Very good understanding of Networking concepts and related infrastructure components
