Director, Site Reliability Engineering


This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted December 24, 2020.

What is the opportunity?

This role will be responsible for the vision, design, development, implementation and support of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) solutions for all applications supported by the Retail Banking & Payments Technology (RBPT) Engineering Transformation (ET) SRE organization. As the Engineering arm of the RBPT ET SRE organization, this team will work collaboratively with the Delivery arm of the same organization and any other IT partners required to succeed in its mandate. Lastly, you will need expert knowledge and extensive experience leading an application development and/or technology operations organization.

What will you do?

  • Set vision for SRE product base (monitoring, alerting, machine learning anomaly detection, self-healing, reliability testing) and drive best-in-class technical solutions by tracking closely industry leading solutions and applying to RBC environment and needs
  • Lead with engineering mindset and enable teams to meet objectives, implement changes to processes, tools, and methods that result in increased agility and machine learning first approach to system support and maintenance
  • Ensure all systems maintain technology currency (perform server patching, certificate renewal, etc.) with keen eye on automating opportunities and ensure availability and uptime of applications in scope, as per service level objectives
  • Develop governance of unit, working with senior leadership to provide the structure and definition to effectively manage the RBPT SRE organization
  • Responsible for all SRE metrics capture to support targets and actuals for program yearly goals
  • Provide expertise, direction, coaching and development to build the team capability

What do you need to succeed?


  • 10 to 12 years of related experience in Software Engineering (SRE, DevOps, Cloud, Data)
  • 7 to 10 years of people management experience
  • Extensive experience in a variety of environments (Cloud, distributed systems, mainframe)
  • Excellent communication skills, negotiation skills, and stakeholder management
  • Hands-on experience in a variety of SRE tools (Ansible, Dynatrace Managed, Moogsoft, PagerDuty, ServiceNow, GitHub, Slack, Elastic, Logstash, Kibana, Blue Prism, Catch Point)
  • Solid experience in DevOps and Agile methodologies
  • Experience in vendor management and 3rd party relationship management


  • Experience in supporting Cloud platforms: Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF) and OpenShift Container Platform (OCP)
