As the Manager, Payroll & HR Operations, you will spearhead nation-wide payroll management and HR operations, while complying and meeting legislative requirements. You will be responsible and accountable for building the payroll foundation to establish sustainable best practices, implementing necessary processes and controls to mitigate financial and legal risks. You will bring to the table your subject-matter expertise regarding payroll principles and be responsible for educating your respective business partners. You will also be pivotal in identifying and translating business needs into system requirements to improve operating accuracy and efficiency.


Payroll Management (80%): Perform duties that require an understanding of company payroll policies and procedures. In addition, you will:

  • Act as subject-matter expert of the team and oversee and lead Canadian payroll processing
  • Be proactive in all market knowledge in payroll best practices (e.g., auditing) and payroll compliance
  • Perform audits on data and system maintenance, including, but not limited to, new hire set up, tax forms processing, local taxes, timekeeping input, direct deposit set up, benefits set up, terminations, and garnishments processing
  • Advance payroll service delivery model while establishing and evolving processes and standards that consistently deliver against company objectives
  • Coach other internal teams on best practices, policies and programming to reduce errors, encourage learning and understanding
  • Provide client support to all areas of the Sephora Canada’s business (stores and corporate office) which can include, but is not limited to, payroll processing, ticket management, issue trend analysis, and project related work
  • Develop and maintain pay policies, payroll calendars, process maps and other procedural documentation along with managing the regular preparation of relevant reports
  • Meet payroll financial standards by providing annual budget information, monitor expenditures and implement corrective actions and long-term controls
  • Ensure all legislative requirements regarding tax withholding, remitting tax payments, fulfilling wage garnishments, preparing T4’s, and income reporting have been met both on-going and at year-ending
  • Maintain confidential information when required by legal or ethical standards and professionalism to ensure privacy of employee records
  • Manage risk exposure and maintain a strong control environment around Payroll management


HR Operations/ Systems Management (20%)

  • Liaison between internal business partners and US HR Ops/ IT teams to:
  • Define, evaluate and translate business requests into system requirements
  • Provide feedback on dependencies and priorities for system requests
  • Be proactive about sprint requirements
  • Implement and maintain controls to ensure systems are operating accurately and efficiently
  • Provide reporting and analytical support




  • 5+ years of Canadian payroll experience, including expertise in a multi-state payroll environment
  • CPP (Certified Payroll Professional), this is considered an asset  
  • Have knowledge of Ceridian Dayforce or similar time & attendance and payroll cloud-applications
  • Value interpersonal and client service skills, with a specialty in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships. You tactfully and courteously collaborate with business partners and clients when explaining the functions and policies of payroll
  • Are analytical and love to problem-solve, you’re an Excel whiz with demonstrated ability to analyze data to present insightful conclusions 
  • Are organized and strategic, with the ability to work independently and efficiently in a rapidly changing environment
