Registered Practical Nurse

This is a Contract position in Hamilton, ON posted September 10, 2020.

The Stem Cell Transplant Program located at the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Center at Hamilton Health Sciences, serves adults with malignant hematological diseases who are candidates for an autologous or allogeneic stem cell transplant. The program includes a stem cell collection center for transplant recipients and related donors, as well as Canadian Blood Services donors.
B4, Oncology Day Services provide integrated and outpatient care for individuals with Hematological disorders in an ambulatory setting. The primary modes of therapy are chemotherapy administration, blood product transfusion, stem cell harvest and apheresis.

The Registered Practical Nurse provides nursing care to support the pre-transplant phase of care delivery for patients receiving a stem cell transplant. This includes supporting the donor search process by conducting donor assessments, health history taking, coordinating blood specimen collection for HLA typing and other tests, documentation and data management, and other nursing care to support the continuity of care for transplant donors and recipients.
As a member of the health care team, the Registered Practical Nurse will assist with Stem cell/cellular therapy related treatments, donor coordination and assessments, treatments, performs assessments and assists as a member of the healthcare team, the Registered Practical Nurse provides patient care within the Scope of Practice of a Registered Practical Nurse.

1. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse or eligible for temporary registration
2. Current Certificates or current community college studies in oncology, asepsis, wound care, airway management, complex wound care, ostomy management, patient assessment, urinary catheterization, administering enteral feeds, transcribing orders
3. Documented completion of a recognized IV Administration, Venipuncture and Blood and Blood Product Administration course Experience working with central lines would be considered an asset
4. Experience with patients undergoing transfusion therapy and out patient follow up with bone marrow transplants and monitoring patient outcomes within last 2 years.
5. Current BCLS certification
6. Recent (within the last 2 years) experience in the care of oncology patients and hematology patients
7. Minimal 3 years direct patient care experience
8. Demonstrated knowledge of the current assessment and management of a broad range of oncology patients including hematology, chemotherapy, radiation and palliative care patients?
9. Demonstrated willingness and ability to work safely with biohazardous byproducts
10. Demonstrated ability to function in an environment which is fast-paced, , collaborating with the RN
11. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, families and other members of the healthcare team
12. Ability to set priorities and organize work in response to patient needs
13. Demonstrated ability to support patients and families of patients who are terminally ill through death and dying
