 The Neurosurgery department is an academic and service unit within Toronto Western Hospital /University Health Network (UHN) serving the neurosurgery needs of the Toronto central area. We are also a tertiary referral resource for the greater Toronto area and the province therefore serving Ontarians for specialized programs and services such as central nervous system cancers, pituitary tumours, vascular and stroke patients, spine surgeries, functional and epilepsy surgeries, hydrocephalus, brain abscesses and minor traumas.

 Our team includes neurosurgery staff, residents and fellows, a physician assistant, nurse practitioners, allied health, nursing and clerical staff.  We work closely with other services including neurology, radiology and radiation and medical oncology. 

UHN has developed comprehensive PA Medical Directives, a PA Council and leadership structure to assist PAs and their supervisors with on-boarding, organizational issues and support.


The Physician Assistant (PA) will be based at Toronto Western Hospital and provide patient care in a team setting, both in ambulatory clinics and the inpatient unit.  The PA will provide medical care to in-patients and clinic patients, providing assessments, investigations, symptom management and work with the team on disposition and follow-up plans. The PA will be offered training and educational opportunities both at orientation and also at an ongoing basis, and will be expected to develop their potential as a leader and teacher in the program.                 

Principal responsibilities include utilizing and demonstrating a theoretical knowledge and advanced level of clinical competence and excellence in caring for neurosurgery patients. This involves collecting and interpreting data about the health of patients, symptom management, developing a medical diagnosis and management plan – in a team environment. The PA will play a vital role on the interprofessional team and will have quality improvement, research and administrative responsibilities. There will also be opportunities to participate in policy or clinical pathway development as well as education and professional development. The PA will interact with other team members including staff neurosurgeons, consulting physicians, other PAs, nurse practitioners, trainees (residents and fellows), nurses and other clinical and allied health staff. The PA will perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

  • 2020 Graduate of the McMaster or Consortium Physician Assistant Program
  • Successful completion of  PA certification exam in February 2021 and become Certified by the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC)
  • Eligible to work in Canada/Ontario
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
  • Proficient and appropriate use of diagnostic and procedural skills
  • Demonstrated effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team
  • Demonstrated ability to perform well in critical and high stress situations
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
  • Demonstrated ability to apply basic computer skills
  • Willingness to work with the supervising physician to adjust medical directives as needed and evolve the role to meet the patient/program needs
