Physician Assistant

Hamilton Health Sciences

This is a Contract position in Hamilton, ON posted December 1, 2020.

The Medical Affairs department is responsible for overseeing administration for Professional Staff at Hamilton Health Sciences. Medical Affairs works closely with the Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Executive, the Senior Medical Officer, and Physician Chiefs. Medical Affairs supports medical workforce recruitment, credentialing, resource planning/allocation, education, and communication within the hospital. The department supports medical learners at McMaster University Faculty of Health Science (FHS), partnering closely with the leadership of FHS.

General Internal Medicine (GIM) at the Juravinski site is an active inpatient program providing integrated clinical, research and education services for adults with surgical needs and/or digestive disease disorders. The GIM units are comprised of diverse services including surgical, medical and palliative care. The multidisciplinary GIM team work collaboratively to provide efficient high quality care. Patients are often admitted for management of complex issues such as surgical emergencies and symptom control.

The Physician Assistant will work under the direct supervision of an immediately available Attending Internist within a multidisciplinary team in an academic in-patient setting. The Physician Assistant will play a major role in facilitating consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity of care, and will also identify patients with acute clinical issues common to medical patients and work within the multidisciplinary team to appropriately manage patient care. The Physician Assistant will provide a full range of physician assistant services in accordance with privileges granted, request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health care resources as indicated, order diagnostic tests as applicable, prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

1. Graduate of Physician Assistant Program
2. Prior experience in an acute general internal medicine setting an asset
3. Demonstrated ability to make decisions in times of emergencies
4. Demonstrated ability to work alongside Intensivists, Nurses and other Health Care Professionals
5. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills
6. Demonstrated ability to promote professional development
7. Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking skills
8. Demonstrated commitment to patient and family-centered care
9. Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem-solving, organization and prioritization
