Director, Financial Insights and Profitability

Job Description:

Working closely with, and reporting to, the VP & CFO, Client Experience Office and Digital Solutions, the Director, Financial Insights and Profitability will collaborate with the business units and finance teams to drive a deeper understanding of product profitability across the group and support new and existing initiatives to optimize financial performance. Product-level financials have long been at the foundation for decision making in the insurance industry and this role will experience it first hand.

This is a high profile and influential role where the Director will be working with executives and their teams across multiple business lines. This role requires a qualified actuary who possesses strong analytical skills, business acumen and the ability to collaborate effectively with others.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Work in close collaboration with the VP & CFO to drive key strategic initiatives

  • Build out P&L profitability by product line across the insurance and wealth business lines

  • Responsible for the development, preparation and analysis of Statement of Earnings (SOE) and ensuring business executive understanding.  Liaise with Individual/GB teams on valuation.

  • Provide a healthy challenge for product pricing and VNB calculations and assumptions

  • Identify opportunities to optimize the business unit P&Ls and maximize earnings and VNB across revenues and expenses

  • Provide and contribute product profitability expertise to financial plan, forecasting and new projects, including guiding project cost/benefit analysis

  • Prepare and present prioritized optimization initiatives to senior business unit leaders to gain buy-in on their execution.  Track and report on initiative progress to business leaders, holding others accountable to ensure project goals are achieved

  • Perform ad-hoc analysis and provide recommendations to executives to influence decisions

  • Lead and support assigned components of the business plan in partnership with the finance team

  • Participate in Finance projects, including collaboration with Canadian Finance as required

  • Provide leadership and support to the finance team contributing to its high performance culture


  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills

  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with senior management

  • Ability to influence business partners including other Canadian Finance teams, the Business Units, Support Units and Corporate

  • Accuracy and attention to detail

  • Strong technical, analytical and problem solving skills with ability to focus on key messages and trends

  • Flexible to changing priorities, timelines and comfort with ambiguity

  • Self-motivated and results-oriented


  • FSA and/or FCIA designation required.

  • 7+ years working experience in the insurance industry

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint

  • Experience in business planning or financial reporting

  • Prior pricing or valuation experience an asset.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
